Starting today, Blue Collar Social is surfacing active federal contracting opportunities directly from SAM.gov — the U.S. government's official source for federal procurement data. Tradespeople, contractors, and small businesses can now browse 200+ live solicitations across construction and specialty trades, searchable in one place, with no login required.
Federal contracting has always been one of the most significant and underutilized markets available to skilled tradespeople. The U.S. federal government is the world's largest buyer of goods and services — and construction, maintenance, and specialty trades represent a substantial share of that spending. But for most small contractors and independent tradespeople, finding and tracking those opportunities has historically meant navigating government portals that are difficult to search and harder to interpret.
We built Federal Bids to change that.
What's included
Federal Bids pulls active solicitations from SAM.gov — the official System for Award Management — covering open contracting opportunities posted by federal agencies nationwide. Each listing includes the soliciting agency, place of performance, response deadline, set-aside type, NAICS code, and a direct link to the full solicitation on SAM.gov.
Current coverage spans 16 construction and specialty trade categories:
We also pull historical award data from USAspending.gov, the federal government's open spending database. That gives contractors a window into which agencies are awarding contracts in their trade area, at what dollar values, and to which recipients — useful context before investing time in a bid.
Why federal contracting matters for tradespeople
The federal government awards billions of dollars in construction and specialty trade contracts every year — covering everything from base maintenance and facility repairs to large-scale infrastructure projects. A significant portion of that spend is specifically set aside for small businesses, veteran-owned firms, and disadvantaged business enterprises.
“Federal contracts are publicly posted, competitively awarded, and paid reliably. For a qualified tradesperson, they're among the most predictable revenue streams available.”
Unlike private-sector leads that depend on referrals or advertising, federal solicitations are public by law. Any qualified contractor can bid. The barrier has never been access to the information — it's been the friction of finding and interpreting it. That's what we're reducing.
How to access Federal Bids
Federal Bids is available now, free, and does not require an account.
Once you find a solicitation that fits your trade and capacity, click through to SAM.gov to review the full scope, attachments, and submission instructions. Federal contracting has its own registration requirements — most notably, a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) through SAM.gov — so if you plan to bid, make sure your business registration is current.
What's next
Today's launch covers active solicitations and historical award data. We're continuing to expand the data pipeline with fresher sync cycles, filtering by state and agency, and tools to help tradespeople track solicitations they're watching. If you have a specific trade category or agency type you'd like to see prioritized, let us know.
The federal market is large, stable, and underserved by the tools currently available to small contractors. We think that's worth changing.
